Overview

North Shields 800 (NS800) was a large scale cultural parade celebrating 800 years of North Shields, bringing together heritage, community stories and contemporary creativity across the town.

My role focused on digital design, motion graphics and large scale projection visuals, working closely with the NS800 team, local organisations and council. I designed and delivered site specific projection content that transformed two historic local buildings, using animation, typography and archival references to reflect North Shields’ maritime history, shipbuilding, fishing, heritage and local voices.

Alongside the creative work, I was involved in planning and organising production for live public projections. This included site assessments, coordinating equipment setup, managing installation timelines, and putting safety measures in place for working in public spaces, such as equipment positioning, cable management, crowd considerations and safe operating procedures during live events.

A core part of the project was translating historical material into bold, accessible visuals that worked at architectural scale. This involved developing visual concepts, animating bespoke content, testing compositions on real structures, and adapting work to different surfaces, aspect ratios and viewing distances. I also handled technical setup and playback, ensuring visuals were reliable, legible and impactful in live environments.

The project required close collaboration, flexibility and problem solving, balancing creative ambition with real-world constraints like weather, access, timelines and hardware. The result was a series of immersive projections that embedded NS800’s celebrations directly into the town, using light and motion to connect past and present in a way that felt contemporary, local and people focused.
